Aherne, Thomas Joseph

Thomas Joseph Aherne was born in Montreal, Quebec on 22 January 1958 to Michael and Margaret Aherne. He had five siblings: Mary, Breeda, James, Kathleen, and Margaret. His passions in life were learning, teamwork, taking on challenges, and teaching others. His pursuit of those passions led to a 21-year long career in the Canadian Military, where he served in the Royal Canadian Regiment, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and the Canadian Airborne Regiment. He earned many achievements, awards, and honours. In 1984, he completed qualifications to become a course instructor. His leadership qualities and mastery of many military skills led to his appointment to the elite units Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) and Joint Task Force 2 (JTF-2). After he retired from the Canadian Armed Forces with the rank of Warrant Officer in 1997, he started his own electrical contracting business based in Calgary, Alberta. He was previously married to Pamela Jill Plummer. He later married Maureen McKee. He died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 59 on 18 October 2017.

Allan, James C.

James C. Allan enlisted in the Calgary Highlanders in 1939, where he received his commission and went overseas in 1940. Assigned to the Seaforth Highlanders in 1943 he was wounded in Italy. After hospitalization in England, he returned to Canada in December 1944 and took up various administrative posts in Western Canada. He was second-in-command of the First Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in the winter of 1951/52. After holding various staff appointments in Canada he was a member of the Canadian Defence Liaison Staff in Washington, DC. Following this he was with the Military Component of the Canadian Delegation to Indo China and was Commanding Officer of the First Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from 29 June 1959 to 11 April 1961. Promoted to Colonel in July 1962 he became the Commandant of the Royal Canadian School of Infantry and later Director of Infantry. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, a Member of the British Empire Medal and the Canadian Decoration. He retired to Victoria, BC in December 1964.

Armstrong, Harry

Bandsman Harry Armstrong joined Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 1919 as a tuba player. He also acted as head gardener for the Regiment, maintaining the grounds at Camp Shilo and Tuxedo Barracks in Winnipeg. He went overseas in 1939, and became a sergeant with the 1st Divisional Band and later Royal Canadian Artillery Band. He died shortly after the Second World War.

Arril, Kenneth

ZP 1463 Kenneth James Arril joined the Canadian Army as an Officer Cadet 13 March 1943. Promoted to Lieutenant in June, he was transferred to the A-35 Canadian Parachute Training Centre to undertake training for the First Canadian Parachute Battalion and qualified as a parachutist 3 September 1943. He embarked for overseas service 15 February 1944 and was wounded 6 June 1944. Returning to Canada 18 April 1945 he was posted to the A-35 Canadian Parachute Training Centre and promoted to Captain 9 February 1946. Captain Arril remained as a parachute instructor at the Canadian Joint Air Training Centre after being promoted to Major in 1952. From July 1956 to August 1957 Major Arril was specially employed in Indo-China. He then joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Depot staff as Chief Instructor 16 January 1960 coming from the Royal Canadian School of Infantry at Camp Bordon. From 1961 to 1964 he served in various Headquarters Staff positions, mainly in Manitoba before being posted to UNTSO in Pakistan in 1965 to 1966. He retired in 1967. He died on March 2, 2002, and was buried in Ottawa.
