Stephens, Ray

P 22191 William Raymond Stephens, 1916- , was born in Caerphilly, Wales. He came from a musical family and undertook studies in several instruments and in voice. He developed particular interest in the tuba. He joined Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 1936 as a bandsman and became a drummer for the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Dance Band formed ca.1937. When war broke out he was stationed with the Regiment in England was later promoted to Sergeant. He transferred to the 1st Canadian Division Band in March 1941, then to the Royal Canadian Artillery Band, then Allied Broadcast Network in London. During the final year of the war he served in Italy and Northwestern Europe. Following the war he worked for the music retailers Boosey and Hawkes (Canada) and Frederick Harris Music Company. He is the author of The Harps of War (1986), Memories and Melodies of World War II (1987), and The Canadian Entertainers of World War II (1991). He married Eunice Davies, and they had two sons, David and Glyn. In 1991 he was living at Oakville, Ontario.

Milne, Arthur Robb

Arthur Robb Milne was born 16 September 1884. An agricultural student from Point Clair Quebec he enlisted with the 1st University Company as Private #410955. He joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry 28 July 1915. He rose in rank from Private to Lance Corporal and then to Lieutenant 18 October 1917. He received the Military Medal 6 January 1917. Struck Off Strength with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry 13 March 1918 and demobilized 25 September 1919. Returned to the Militia rising to the rank of Major.

Irwin, William Eric C.

William Eric C. Irwin was born 24 January 1890 in Ottawa, the fourth child of Lieutenant Colonel De La Cherois Thomas Irwin, Inspector General of the Royal Canadian Artillery and Isabella Hamilton. He was a graduate of McGill University in Electrical Engineering and joined the 1st University Company in February 1915. He trained at Niagara-On-The-Lake and sailed for England on the SS Northland with the 1st Reinforcing Draft of the 38th Battalion in May 1915. He was taken on strength with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as a Lieutenant 26 July 1915. He was wounded in both legs 2 June 1916 at the Battle of Mount Sorrel and mentioned in dispatches. He was hospitalized at Newcastle and Ramsgate, England and returned to Canada 7 December 1916. After receiving an operation on his leg at Montreal General Hospital he was posted to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Depot in Ottawa and promoted to Major 15 June 1917. In November 1917 he returned to England as part of a reinforcement draft. Returning to Canada in February 1918 he was assigned duties at Army Headquarters, becoming Chief of General Staff in Ottawa and had his leg operated on again in August 1918 in Toronto. After recovering he acted as Aide-de-Camp for the Duke of Devonshire during his tour of the Maritimes in December 1918. He was released sometime in early 1919. He died in 1963 in Toronto.
