Thompson, Ernest A.

TK109745 Ernest A. Thompson was a Private with the Rocky Mountain Rangers from 1937 to 1940 when he was attached to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry for instructor training June 1940. After Junior Non Commissioned Officer and Paratroop training in England he was attached to the 49th Edmonton Regiment #3 Assault Commando Group and participated in Operation Gauntlet. He was reassigned to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in April 1942 as an Instructor and Section leader. In October 1942 he was assigned to the British Army on the CANLOAN program and in North Africa to the 2nd London Irish Rifles. He again rejoined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in England in April 1943 and proceeded with them to Sicily. Fought with the Regiment in Sicily and Italy July 1943 to February 1944. Received a commission to Lieutenant and returned to England to train with the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. Served with the Fort Garry Horse for Operation Overlord. With Lord Strathcona's Horse and Royal Canadian Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) in Korea as a Captain August 1950 to November 1951. Served with RCEME at Camp Vernon, January 1952 to June 1956. Struck Off Strength to Supplementary Reserve June 1956. He passed away 12 January 1997.

Herdy, Alec

Alec G. Herdy graduated from high school in Scarborough, Ontario in 1976. He served as a Private in the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (3PPCLI) at Wainwright, Alberta and Esquimalt, BC in 1980-1983. He studied at the University of Victoria, 1997-2003, completing a B.A. in History and Geography and secondary education studies. He coordinated an educational program on landmine awareness for the Canadian Red Cross in Victoria, ca. 2001-ca. 2002. He was involved with the education program of The Military Museums in Calgary in 2007, and was a volunteer writer and editor for the PPCLI Association Calgary Branch Newsletter and the PPCLI annual The Patrician, 2008-2013. He volunteered with the PPCLI Regimental Archives, 2009-2013, managing a program that provided compilations on past regimental members for family historians.

Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Association. Vancouver Island Branch

A group of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) veterans living in Victoria, BC was represented at the inaugural meeting of the PPCLI Association in October 1947. The Victoria Branch was one of the components of the Association when it was legally incorporated in 1953. It was renamed Vancouver Island Branch in 2004.

Osland, Andrew

ZP1995 Andrew Osland, b. 1919, joined Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in Winnipeg in 1937. He deployed for overseas service, but was struck off strength in 1940 to attend officer training school. He became a Lieutenant in 1943, and assumed command of a platoon of PPCLI in 1946. He was a Captain by 1953, and in 1956 or 1957 transferred to the Canadian Guards. By 1960 he was a Major, stationed at Western Command headquarters, with responsibility for liaising with units of the Canadian Rangers in the northern Territories and Pacific coast. Early in his military career, he became actively involved in the sport of boxing. He qualified as a judge and referee, and was manager of the PPCLI boxing team. He was the first President of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association. He died in Edmonton in 1979.

Royal Australian Regiment

The Royal Australia Regiment (RAR) is the parent administrative regiment for Australian infantry battalions. The Australian Regiment was formed in 1948 from amalgamation of three infantry battalions occupying post-war Japan. In 1949 it was given permission to use the Royal title. During the Korean War, the 3rd Battalion of RAR joined the 2nd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in stopping the advance of the Chinese Army at KapYong. Both units were awarded the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation. As a result of this shared experience, RAR and PPCLI are allied regiments. RAR has also seen active or peacekeeping service in Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, Somalia, Cambodia, Rwanda, East Timor, Solomon Islands, Iraq, and Afghanistan. As of 2017 it consisted of six battalions.

Papineau, Talbot

Talbot Papineau, great-grandson of the Patriote leader Louis-Joseph Papineau, was largely raised in his mother's Anglophone culture. He was one of the first Canadians to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and became a lawyer. During the First World War he joined Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, was promoted to Major, and was awarded the Military Cross. He was killed at the Battle of Passchendaele in October 1917.
