Burness, Kenneth Charles

Born 22 July 1893 in London, England, McG144 Kenneth Charles "Casey" Burness was attending the University of Toronto when he enlisted with the 2nd University Company 26 May 1915. He joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in the field 1 September 1915 as a Private but was quickly promoted to Sergeant and obtained his commission to Lieutenant in early 1916. Promoted to Captain 28 June 1916 he was appointed as Regimental Adjutant. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions at the Battle of Amiens in August 1918 and the Bar to his MC for gallantry during the Pursuit to Mons in November 1918. Struck Off Strength with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry 20 March 1919 he attended the Small Arms School in Hythe in 1923 and Staff College at Camberley, England in 1926-1927. Upon returning to Canada he was promoted to Major and appointed Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General at Halifax from 1928 to 1930 then a General Staff Officer 2 at National Defence Headquarters 1930-1933 and the War Office 1933-1935. In 1937 he was appointed Associate Professor of Tactics at Royal Military College, Kingston. In 1938 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Chief Instructor and then General Staff Officer 1, in 1940 in charge of curriculum. In April 1941 Lieutenant Colonel Burness was enroute to England to take up a position as General Staff Officer 1, Headquarters Canadian Base Units, when his ship was torpedoed and sunk and he was reported missing at sea.

Butler, William E.

SK100519 William E. Butler served in Korea with the Royal Canadian Regiment from 1951 to 1953 and rebadged to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry following the War. He served with the First Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Germany, 1955 to 1957, in Victoria from 1958 to 1963 as a Recruit Instructor and in Edmonton as Manager of the Corporal's Mess from 1966 to 1968. He passed away 28 January 1996.

Campbell, Erwin Russell

Erwin Russell Campbell born 18 April 1898 joined the 65 Battalion 1 April 1916 and eventually served with the 101st Fusilliers as a bugler and stretcher bearer. He was wounded in late 1916 and spent a year at Rust Hall before being transferred to Westcliff Hospital in 1918.

Campbell, John Alexander

A800432 John Alexander "Ian" Campbell Jr was born in Ingersoll, Ontario. He joined the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (3PPCLI) in the autumn of 1950. He trained in Fort Lewis, Washington, and 3PPCLI rotated into the field from autumn 1952 until armistice was declared in the summer of 1953. He returned to Ingersoll, married on 30 July 1955, and had two children. He was active in the Korea Veterans Association of Canada. He died in Ingersoll on 1 March, 2000.

Candy, Gilbert

1541 Gilbert W. Candy was born 30 August 1889 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and saw service with the 15th Light Horse in England prior to immigrating to Canada in 1911. He worked on a dairy farm near Black Diamond, Alberta. He enlisted with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as one of the "originals" on 12 August 1914. Promoted to Lance Corporal 9 October 1915 he was wounded 2 June 1916 at the Battle of Mount Sorrel while acting as a grenade thrower. He was subsequently Struck Off Strength 9 June 1916. He was Mentioned in Dispatches for his actions at Sanctuary Wood. Candy was promoted to Acting Sergeant and remained in England for 3 months as an instructor in Mills Bombs. He returned to Canada 14 October 1916 with other invalid soldiers. After undergoing some treatment for flat feet he was discharged as medically unfit 18 January 1917. He returned to England in 1917 and was involved in a family business exporting pedigreed bulls and rams to Argentina. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1925 and operated a dairy business near Auckland. He married Esther Pike, and they had four children, Field, Robin, Nielson, and Patricia. He passed away in New Zealand in 1983 at the age of 94.
