Herdy, Alec

Alec G. Herdy graduated from high school in Scarborough, Ontario in 1976. He served as a Private in the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (3PPCLI) at Wainwright, Alberta and Esquimalt, BC in 1980-1983. He studied at the University of Victoria, 1997-2003, completing a B.A. in History and Geography and secondary education studies. He coordinated an educational program on landmine awareness for the Canadian Red Cross in Victoria, ca. 2001-ca. 2002. He was involved with the education program of The Military Museums in Calgary in 2007, and was a volunteer writer and editor for the PPCLI Association Calgary Branch Newsletter and the PPCLI annual The Patrician, 2008-2013. He volunteered with the PPCLI Regimental Archives, 2009-2013, managing a program that provided compilations on past regimental members for family historians.

Thompson, Ernest A.

TK109745 Ernest A. Thompson was a Private with the Rocky Mountain Rangers from 1937 to 1940 when he was attached to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry for instructor training June 1940. After Junior Non Commissioned Officer and Paratroop training in England he was attached to the 49th Edmonton Regiment #3 Assault Commando Group and participated in Operation Gauntlet. He was reassigned to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in April 1942 as an Instructor and Section leader. In October 1942 he was assigned to the British Army on the CANLOAN program and in North Africa to the 2nd London Irish Rifles. He again rejoined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in England in April 1943 and proceeded with them to Sicily. Fought with the Regiment in Sicily and Italy July 1943 to February 1944. Received a commission to Lieutenant and returned to England to train with the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. Served with the Fort Garry Horse for Operation Overlord. With Lord Strathcona's Horse and Royal Canadian Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) in Korea as a Captain August 1950 to November 1951. Served with RCEME at Camp Vernon, January 1952 to June 1956. Struck Off Strength to Supplementary Reserve June 1956. He passed away 12 January 1997.

Chatry, Harry

Harry Stephen Chatry was born 2 April 1926 in Delisle, Saskatchewan. He joined the Canadian Army 12 April 1945 and was posted to Vernon, British Columbia to become part of the Pacific force. The Second World War ended before he was posted overseas and he elected to remain in the Permanent Force. He was badged to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Shilo, Manitoba in January 1946 and was promoted to Corporal in 1947. He was posted to Currie Barracks in Calgary in 1947 and made Company Orderly Sergeant. When the Regiment went Airborne in 1948, Corporal Chatry was chosen for Glider pilot training and was sent to the Royal Canadian Air Force School of Aviation Medicine in Toronto and then to Rivers, Manitoba for flight training. He graduated from the #1 Glider Pilot's Course in 1949 and returned to Rivers to join Glider Flight and instruct other pilots. Promoted to Sergeant in the early 50s, he closed Glider Flight in 1955 and returned to Calgary where he was appointed Acting Company Quartermaster of A Company, Second Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. Promoted to Staff Sergeant in 1956 Chatry was posted to Camp Borden as Small Arms Instructor. Posted back to the Second Battalion in 1964 he joined Reconnaissance Platoon and after a jump injury was attached to the Loyal Edmonton Regiment for almost a year. Returning to the Regiment in 1965 Warrant Officer Chatry was posted to the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade in Germany as Brigade Sergeant Major. Later that same year he was transferred to the First Battalion and posted to Hemer, Germany where he was in charge of C Company and then Headquarters Company. When the First Battalion rotated back to Canada, Warrant Officer Chatry stayed in Germany with the Second Battalion, later returning to the First Battalion now stationed at Currie Barracks, Calgary, Alberta in 1968. After working at Regimental Headquarters for a year, Harry Chatry retired from the military in 1969 and settled in Sardis, BC. He was married to Hope Chatry, and they operated several businesses in the Chilliwack/Sardis area. They had three children, Gordon, Leslie, and Sharron. Harry Chatry died 23 April, 2018.

Ware, Cameron Bethel

Cameron Bethel Ware was born 9 August 1913 at London, Ontario, the son of Colonel F.B. Ware. He joined Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry upon graduation from Royal Military College, Kingston in 1935. When the Second World War broke out in 1939 Lieutenant Ware was attached to the British Army. He was taken on strength in September 1939 and rejoined the Regiment in England in 1940 as a Major. He was appointed Second in Command of the Regiment 19 February 1942 and on promotion to Lieutenant Colonel 11 August 1943, led the Regiment in the Italian Campaign from the invasion of the mainland until the end of the battle of the Liri Valley 27 June 1944. He was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He was given command of the 3rd North Shore Regiment from 5 June 1945 to 3 November 1945. Following the War he commanded Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry at Camp MacDonald, Manitoba in 1946-1947. He was promoted to Colonel in 1950 and commanded the Calgary Garrison until his appointment as Commandant, Canadian Services College, Royal Roads, British Columbia in 1952. Promoted to Brigadier General in 1954 he headed the Canadian Military Mission, Far East, Tokyo. In 1955 he became Director General, Military Training in Ottawa and was then appointed Commander 1st Canadian Brigade Group in Calgary in 1958. It was during this time that he was appointed Colonel of the Regiment of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), a position which he held until April 1977. In 1960, he was Commander 4th Canadian Brigade Group, Germany and upon promotion to Major General in 1962 he was appointed Commandant, National Defence College, Kingston until his retirement in 1966. He was married to Anne Bethel “Beth” Lind in 1939, and they had one daughter. Major General Ware passed away 21 January 1999.

LaChance, Jack E.

John Edward "Jack" Croucher was born and educated in Winsdor, Ontario. He adopted the surname of his stepfather, Alex LaChance. He was a Private with the Second and First Battalions of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Korea from June 1951 to June 1952. In early 1951 he trained at Currie Barracks, Calgary; Wainwright, Alberta; Nippon Berra, Japan; and Hara Mura, Japan. After his discharge from the Armed Forces he lived at Sarnia, Ontario where he was a well-known businessman. He was an accomplished writer and poet. His poem "The Korean Veterans Wall" is engraved in granite at the Korea Veterans National Wall of Remembrance in Brampton, Ontario. He married Frances Deschamps in 1955, and they had five children, Wendy, Patti, Jack II, Thomas, and James.

Summersgill, William M.

SM108233 William M. "Bill" Summersgill was born in Edmonton, Alberta on 29 July, 1938 and completed high school in Edmonton. He enlisted and trained at the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Depot in Wainwright, Alberta in 1956, and was taken on strength by the 2nd Battalion of PPCLI in 1957. He was soon promoted to Lance Corporal. In 1963 he transferred to the Canadian Intelligence Corps and was promoted to Sergeant, working as an investigator and intelligence analyst in Edmonton, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, and West Germany. He retired from the Regular Force as a Warrant Officer in 1978, but was commissioned a Captain in the Militia, commanding the Intelligence Company, Headquarters Militia Pacific, until his retirement from the Military in 1981. He then worked as an investigator for the Government of British Columbia until 2002. Subsequently he had a career as a manager and consultant in the secured transportation (armoured car) industry. He was a volunteer Board member and president of the George Derby Care Society, which operates an extended care centre for veterans in Burnaby, BC. In 2018 Bill Summersgill was living in North Vancouver, BC.

Hayward, James G.

SH206083 James G. "Jim" Hayward completed his basic training with the Flers-Courcelette Platoon at Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Depot in March 1956. He was taken on strength by the 2nd Battalion of PPCLI. He retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in April 1980 as a Warrant Officer stationed with the Regular Support Staff in Regina, Saskatchewan. With his wife Mona, he became active in the Saskatchewan Branch of the PPCLI Association. In 2017 he was still living in Regina.

Hunt, Gary D.

Gary D. Hunt enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1953. He was commissioned, and by 1958 he was a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (1PPCLI). By 1968 he was a Major, and was commander of No. 4 Guard of 1PPCLI in peacekeeping operations in Cyprus. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel, and served in a number of staff positions in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was living in retirement in Canmore, Alberta, ca. 2000-ca. 2003.

Gray, Hub

Hubert Archibald "Hub" Gray, 1928-2018, joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment in 1948. In October 1950 he volunteered for service in the Korean War, and transferred as a Lieutenant to the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI). In February 1951 he arrived in Korea as second-in-command of the Mortar Platoon. He was said to have acted coolly and decisively during the Battle of KapYong, Korea, 24-25 April 1951. He was later appointed Commander of 12 Platoon, D Company in charge of a machine gun section. Promoted to Captain following his return to Canada in November 1951, he realized his goal of becoming a paratrooper in 1952. He resigned from the Permanent Force in 1953, but continued to serve in the Militia, with the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada and the 48th Highlanders, until 1958. In civilian life, he became a partner in Richardson Securities, specializing in petroleum investments. He was active in veterans' organizations and in the PPCLI Heritage Committee. He was the author of: Beyond the danger close : the Korean experience revealed : 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. - Calgary : Bunker to Bunker Pub., 2003. In 1953 he married Pam Cowie, and they had four sons, Char, Chris, Randy, and Tim.

Waddell, Boyd

Boyd Waddell, 1920-1998, was born and raised in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. He began an apprenticeship in photography in 1937 at the Swift Current Advocate and Sun. In 1940 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as an aerial photographer, spending most of his time at Goose Bay, Labrador and Suffield, Alberta. He married Freda Crum, 1917-2009, of Calgary at Suffield. On his discharge Waddell worked for the Alberta Government Publicity Bureau and McDermid Studios in Edmonton. The Waddells then operated the Pauline Photo Studio at Brooks, Alberta. In 1950 they moved to Calgary where Waddell joined the Department of Veterans Affairs as a medical photographer at the Colonel Belcher Hospital. He also freelanced extensively, showing his work in several major exhibitions, including images from several trips to the Canadian Arctic. Waddell received an Alberta Achievement Award in 1980. He was a member of the Biological Photographic Association and was a founder of the Alberta Medical and Biological Photographic Association. He was also a member and director of the McDougall Stoney Mission Society and did photography for the organization. He was a trustee and chairman of the Last Post Fund and the Veterans Field of Honor. He and his wife Freda had two children, Brent and Wendy (Sorensen).
