Schjelderup, Vilhelm Roger and Ida

Vilhelm Roger Schjelderup was born to Norwegian parents in Smithers, British Columbia in September 1921 and grew up in Courtenay, British Columbia. He was commissioned into the Canadian Army in 1941 and following training was posted to Second Battalion, The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's). He was wounded in France shortly after the Normandy landings in June 1944 and received the Military Cross. Promoted to Captain he rejoined his Regiment a month later and was wounded again and taken prisoner at the Scheldt Estuary. Leading a group of five POWs he escaped from Germany to Holland and worked with the Dutch Resistance for four months. He eventually reached Allied lines in February 1945. He received a bar to his Military Cross for his work with the Dutch Resistance and the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry during operations on the Leopold Canal. Upon his return to Canada he served with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as a Company Commander at Camp Shilo in 1946. He did not serve in Korea but instead attended the Royal Military College of Science in England from October 1949 to October 1951 and then went on to Military Staff College from 1951 to November 1954. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1954 he established the Joint Atomic, Bacteriological and Chemical Defensive School of Warfare at Camp Borden and served as its first Commanding Officer. In 1957 he qualified as a parachutist before taking command of the Second Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from 12 August 1957 until 10 May 1960. Promoted to Colonel in 1962, Schjelderup again held a variety of staff appointments in the 1960s and 1970's including postings to Manitoba Area Headquarters, Ghana, Canadian Forces Headquarters, 1 Combat Group, Command of CFB, Calgary and as part of the Canadian Defence Liaison Staff (London) in 1973. He passed away 29 September 1974. Colonel Schjeldrup was married to Ida Hundevad in 1949 or 1950. Schjelderup Lake near Courtenay, BC is named after him. After Roger's death, Ida Schjelderup lived in the village of Herstmonceux, East Sussex, England. She was a personal friend of Hamilton and Dorothy Gault, Lady Patricia Ramsay (Princess Patricia), and Countess Mountbatten of Burma (Lady Patricia Brabourne). She was an active member of the United Kingdom Branch of the PPCLI Association.

Schaen, Andrew

Andrew Schaen # 16110 joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry 12 September 1939 and was promoted to Company Quarter Master Sergeant later on in the Second World War. He was a member of 14 Platoon Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry deployed in the Village of Telscombe during the Battle of Britain 1941-1942. He was Struck Off Strength 4 May 1945.

Royal Australian Regiment

The Royal Australia Regiment (RAR) is the parent administrative regiment for Australian infantry battalions. The Australian Regiment was formed in 1948 from amalgamation of three infantry battalions occupying post-war Japan. In 1949 it was given permission to use the Royal title. During the Korean War, the 3rd Battalion of RAR joined the 2nd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in stopping the advance of the Chinese Army at KapYong. Both units were awarded the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation. As a result of this shared experience, RAR and PPCLI are allied regiments. RAR has also seen active or peacekeeping service in Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, Somalia, Cambodia, Rwanda, East Timor, Solomon Islands, Iraq, and Afghanistan. As of 2017 it consisted of six battalions.

Rosser, David Hillard

David Hillard Rosser, ca. 1906-1980, was born in Wales and was commissioned an officer of the Royal Welch Guards in 1926. He emigrated to Montreal, Quebec in 1929. He joined Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as a Lieutenant on 22 November 1939. He rose rapidly up the ranks, and left PPCLI in October 1941 to fill various staff positions in England. He rejoined PPCLI on 6 May 1944, as a Major, second-in-command to Lt.Col. Cameron Ware. On 28 June 1944 he was appointed Commanding Officer of PPCLI. On 16 September 1944 he was wounded when a German shell hit his tactical headquarters near the Rimini Line. He was struck off strength but returned to General Staff until 1946. He was appointed to the Order of the British Empire. After the war he worked as a civil servant in England and Wales. In 1947 he married Mary Cecilia Cozens-Hardy. He died at Crawley, Sussex, England in March 1980.

Romsey (family)

Lord Romsey (formerly The Honourable Norton Knatchbull) is the first born son of Lady Patricia Brabourne, The Right Honourable Countess Mountbatten of Burma (Colonel-In-Chief of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry). He is heir to the Barony of Brabourne and the Earldom of Mountbatten. Born in 1947 he married Penelope Meredith Eastwood in 1979. Lady Penelope was born 16 April 1953 and is the daughter of an English father, Reginald Eastwood, and Marion Hood who was born in Alberta.
