The Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, as part of the Canadian Armed Forces falls under the command of the Department of National Defence. Under the direction of the Department of National Defence, the Directorate of History and Heritage (DHH) is mandated to safeguard and disseminate Canadian military history and heritage to meet departmental goals, provide meritorious service recognition, and reinforce Canadian Forces (CF) identity. The Directorate of History and Heritage provides for, administers and maintains the CF museum system and policies for the Canadian Forces. The CF museum system is the collective term for the grouping of CF museums under the supervision of the Staff Officer, Museums and Historical Collections (DHH 5). Each official CF museum (and unaccredited unit/base historical collection) is an independent, self-financed, non-public fund (NPF) institution operating under the authority and direction of its supporting commander. On 1 September, 1996, The Directorate of History (DHist) and, The Directorate of Military Traditions and Heritage (DMTH) were amalgamated to form The Directorate of History and Heritage (DHH). The Canadian Forces Music Centre (CF Mus C) became a sub-unit of DHH on 1 April, 1997. The mission of the Directorate of History and Heritage is to preserve and develop Canadian Forces history, heritage, traditions, military honours, museum and music systems. Official records and photographs are automatically transferred to either the National Archives or the Directorate of History and Heritage. Serving and retired members often obtain copies of War Diaries, their service records and photographs and these items become part of their personal collections.
