The John Henry Richardson fonds covers two distinct periods, his military service and his activities with veterans’ tributes and Korea pilgrimages after his service. He kept extensive news clippings for the time of his service in Korea and through the 1950s, as well as numerous well-labeled photographs from this period. He also kept key service files that provide an outline of his career progression including courses taken and qualifications earned, as well as dates of service. CWO Richardson collected a number of records from Korean pilgrimages in the 1980s and 1990s and veterans’ reunions. He also kept articles and scrapbooks/copied stories concerning his military peers. The fonds also includes a scrapbook/diary possibly kept by a family member documenting the early years of the Second World War.

File 5 - Late 1940s letters, clippings, etc.

The file includes 2 letters and one card from JH Richardson to his mother; a card and drawing from a friend, "Murph"; order of service for Frezenberg commemorative church parade, 1947; dinner menu, New Year's Day, Currie Barracks, 1946. Includes newsclippings about Dr. William Augustus Richardson; relocation of PPCLI from Winnipeg to Calgary; military ceremonies; military exercises; accidental death of Lt Gerald A. Lynch; paratroopers' wings awarded to JH Richardson, RG Buxton, and BAJ Franklin.

File 2 - Service Records

The file consists of JH Richardson's COTC instructions [1944], enlistment instructions, enlistment certificate, enlistment newsclipping, pass (1946), photograph (1947), Pay Books (1945-1969), Unit Employment Record (1945-1972), poem, medical and vaccination records, stretcher bearer qualification certificate, Teruko (Tetsuko) Kurokawa (wife) citizenship certificate, letter congratulating on a good parade from LCol Hewson, discharge certificate.

John Henry Richardson Military Service series

CWO Richardson kept extensive news clippings for the time of his service in Korea and through the 1950s, as well as numerous well-labeled photographs from this period. He also kept key service files that provide an outline of his career progression including courses taken and qualifications earned, as well as dates of service. The series includes stories and articles on other soldiers, including Jack LaChance and Bob Coulter. Items of note include telegraphs notifying his mother of his being wounded, newsclippings on the DCM award, and original letters from his time in hospital.
