Gordon Appelbe Smith fonds

The fonds contains 8 photographs of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry officers prior to inspection by Lady Patricia Ramsay at Seaford, Sussex England and prior to embarking for Sicily in June 1943. Also included are 2 photographs of Lieutenant Gordon Smith wounded in Sicily, 2 of him sketching and resting during a bivouac, one of his friend Capt. George Corkett; an obituary of Rowan Coleman; a 1996 photocopy of regimental history pages which mention Gordon Smith; and 3 messages delivered to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry while enroute to and after landing in Sicily, June/July 1943. Includes 4 photographs of wartime paintings, an autobiographical sketch, and a reminiscence on the invasion of Sicily. Includes 2 photos of him at work in his art studio in his late 90s; and obituaries written after his death.

The fonds contains Geof Crossman's obituaries; 2 photographs of him at the Canadian Airborne Centre, 1987, 3 photographs of the Regimental Museum Staff, 1998, 3 photographs of Warrant Officer Crossman at the Military Collectors Club and Gun Show at the Mayfield Hotel August 1998 and 5 photographs of his retirement party. Textual records include 63 various Canadian Army training manuals, booklets, handouts and binders on parachute procedures, weapons, mines and vehicle identification, an Airborne Association Kitshop catalogue and the Warrant Officer's and Sergeant's Mess By-laws, 1994. Also included are 13 maps of Canadian Forces Bases and training areas and 1 Croatia battle map.

Includes photographs of Hamilton Gault's funeral, correspondence of Dorothy Gault, records of Hatch Court Museum (1972-1995), and research documents collected by Jeffery Williams. The album largely consists of publicity photographs (many autographed) and programs documenting the activities of the PPCLI Comedy Company and its successor, the Dumbells. Includes a nominal roll (compiled 1968) of all members of the Comedy Company from its formation on 1916 May 16 to its amalgamation with the Dumbells on 1918 Nov 12. Includes materials created 1916-1968. The fonds consists of Conrad Stephens' memorabilia from the Dumbells, the musical and comedy troupe formed by the 3rd Canadian Division during the First World War which amalgamated with the PPCLI Comedy Company. After the War the troupe continued to tour Canada and the United States until 1929. Consists predominantly of publicity photos and portraits of the performers, many of them autographed. Includes a portrait of Stephens in his wartime uniform, a portrait of him as a veteran in the 1950s, and newsclippings about a reunion concert of the PPCLI Comedy Company mounted in 1955.

The fonds includes Gordon Craig's documents while he was a prisoner of war at Stendal, Germany. Includes an album consisting mostly of postcard photographs of fellow prisoners. Includes a note indicating that Craig was bayonetted while carrying Maj Stanley Jones off the battlefield. Includes a presumed high school graduation portrait of Gordon Craig; and album pages showing Gordon with his friends, and training at Niagara-on-the-Lake with the 1st University Company. Includes a letter, Clifford T. Jones (brother of Maj Stanley L. Jones) to William McSpadden expressing appreciation for Craig's kindness to Stanley Jones while in prison camp.

This collection consists predominantly of photographs of the 2nd Battalion of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) during the conflict on the Korean Peninsula from its formation on August 7, 1950 to the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement on July 27, 1953. Includes a few images taken after the war. The 2nd Battalion was the first battalion of the PPCLI to arrive in Korea (December 18, 1950) serving with the 27th and 28th British Commonwealth Infantry Brigades until replaced by the 1st Battalion PPCLI on November 4, 1951.

The fonds consists largely of self-produced booklets of reminiscences and photographs detailing the military service of Murray C. Edwards. Included are descriptions of his childhood in New Jersey and Vermont; enlistment and officer selection during the Second World War; the Battle of KapYong, Korea, 1951; returning from Korea 1951; trans-Atlantic ship travel; courts-martial in Germany, 1954-1955; peacekeeping in Cyprus, 1964; and peacekeeping in Israel and Syria, 1967-1968. Includes correspondence with friends Hub Gray and Tom Rockburne, and a proposed address to the Senate of Canada regarding a proposed National Korean Veterans' Day; correspondence regarding official recognition of the heroism of Lt. Mike Levy at the Battle of KapYong (2016). Includes photographs from the Korean War.
