On 16 September 1944 he was wounded when a German shell hit his tactical headquarters near the Rimini Line. He was struck off strength but returned to General Staff until 1946. He was appointed to the Order of the British Empire. After the war he worked as a civil servant in England and Wales. In 1947 he married Mary Cecilia Cozens-Hardy.
