Biografie
552 William Gavin Johnston was a member of the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles during the Boer War and joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as a Private in August 1914. He was promoted to Sergeant and was awarded the Military Medal 9 December 1916 for his actions at the Somme in September 1916. Commissioned as a Lieutenant 9 March 1917 he was Struck Off Strength 16 July 1918.

Photograph taken by E. Daussy. The Originals were the first 1098 soldiers to form the Regiment and most had previous military service. These would also have been the first Canadians to join the fighting in France in December 1914.
